Lighting

The lighting in the opening of push starts off light but then turns into mostly dark depressing colours, there aren't any bright lights shown in the film, keeping that gloomy feeling among the audience. As the pictures and videos go on with the narrators talk, the lighting gives them that sad, depressing look and also shows the way the producers want this movie to be.

In one of the videos shown, a lady speaks about her traumatic experience, the lighting doesn't show any of her facial features and is like a shadow, saying "They have already began to control my mind." The way the director made the lady look disheartening- putting this in dark lighting- makes the audience feel depressed and saddened about the situation. Another example would be when crowds of people where running and the lighting only gives off half of the people, the rest are seen as shadows, giving off that distressed feeling.

The director also made this opening depressing, by making the pictures dark, giving off almost no light at all. The purpose to this, is to build up the miserable theme that the director have going on, but also making it exciting, so the audience keeps on watching.

Music

All though there are both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds, this is mostly non-diegetic sounds. The music starts at a light, slow sound of piano and violins are heard playing, producing a calmness vibe to it. As the film progress' the music starts to creep up in volume, and also increases the speed of the music, but only when something important is about to happen- giving the viewers a hint that somethings about to happen. The music gives the audience a big clue on what the mood is. An example of this is when the 'Big Bad Man' comes in and drums start playing, with the help of the fast beat of the violins, it changes the soft sweet music the previous pianos where giving. It gives it that more dangerous feel and intensifying the mood- showing that this man is dangerous, this is then proven when the father gets killed, although you can't see that the father has died, it is verified when the man says "what a waste, bring the body back to the lab" You know that this man is dangerous because in the film he tries to kill the little boy- who is now a man in his early twenties- trying to put a stop to division. Another example would be when the man is talking to the boy about the future, a moment between father and son, a slow soft piano starts to play- showing that the mood is full of passion and love because the piano has a soft slow beat and the father says "I love you, I always knew you where special, turns out I was right." During the movie it shows that the boy was special because he helps put a stop to 'divison' killing and experimenting on people like him. The instruments played are mainly just violin, drums and piano, no voices are added to the music.

The music in this film shows the different moods and helps direct the audience to what the director wants them to feel. The music helps give it that exciting theme, and also helps intensify the film by building momentum.

Sound

Diegetic sounds are used in the beginning of the film Push, As the camera shot gets a close-up on the maids watch, all that is heard is the ticking noise of the clock- because the man seems to be in a rush, it indicates that he maybe running out of time, or that he has to be somewhere at a certain time. There is also an electrical sound when the man pushes the boy out of the room using his powers,- this emphasizes the sound of his powers, this sound is used throughout the movie, there is a specific sound for each power/ abilities a person has, for example pushes have an electrical sound, bleeders have a white noise sound etc this gives an idea of what type of abilities a person has, for pushers the electrical sound gives it that power and strength that this man possess, and the bleeders abilities to make you bleed by screaming, giving that ‘white noise’ affect, gives the viewers the idea of how painful it would be. It helps add to the thrill and excitement that the viewers already feel as they watch the film.

That scene then finishes and is taken over by the narrators voice, as she talks she gives us clues in what is to be seen in this film, like people being hunted down, battles between groups fighting to get the best weapons for there countries, and people being experimented on. As this scene goes on, it gets more intense and screams, explosions and media reports are being heard as the narrator continues to speak- this gives the audience a rough idea of what is to be seen in the movie and shows that this is an action packed movie. The sounds in the beginning, gives the film that 'edge' that goes with action movies. This gives the audience a better appreciation of the film and again helps to set the mood for the audience.

Shot size/angle +Camera movement.

At the beginning of 'Push' the camera movements starts from the end of a hall way, gradually moving down the hall. It then comes to the maid, then the man and boy enter, the camera gets individuals close-up shots of the father and son. The camera shot zooms up on the boy, cutting off the mans head, then there is a close up on the man- showing the audience that these two characters are of some importance to the movie, this is proven during the movie because when the boy grows up, he helps bring down Division, and is one of the main characters in the film. The father looks down at the maids wrist, then the camera zooms in on the maids watch where the man was looking. When the father and son enter the room, the camera then zooms in on the father and son together, then gets the characters individually with over the shoulder shots, while the father tells the boy something important. The camera is then directed back to the hall, giving a close up of the maid, then gives a close-up of the gun she is holding. There is then an extreme close up on one man that is holding a sniper, in full protective gear, as if to say he was FBI, but later is known as the group called 'Division'. As the camera gets a close-up on the maid and the gun, it then tells the audience that the people that are hunting the father and son down, are extremely prepared and that they seem to have experience, showing us that they have been doing this for quit a while. This logic is then proven when the armed men come in to the scene. The camera also gives the little boys POV when he is watching them from behind the wall in the hall, and also when he's hiding behind the window.

After this beginning, a number of the photographs are being shown. They are either cut, wiped or dissolved, being replaced by the next set of pictures/ videos. Big groups of people are shown, like its an ordinary day. Some pictures are shallow focused, possibly to enhance the graphics of the movie and are shown extremely fast, setting the mood of the audience into fear and curiosity. There is also wide- shots of cities and building being blown up near the end. The narrator could be showing a time line from beginning to end, from the calmness of people at the start, to the crowds of protests at the end. The camera then gets dissolved into the next scene where the movie then begins.
