At the beginning of 'Push' the camera movements starts from the end of a hall way, gradually moving down the hall. It then comes to the maid, then the man and boy enter, the camera gets individuals close-up shots of the father and son. The camera shot zooms up on the boy, cutting off the mans head, then there is a close up on the man- showing the audience that these two characters are of some importance to the movie, this is proven during the movie because when the boy grows up, he helps bring down Division, and is one of the main characters in the film. The father looks down at the maids wrist, then the camera zooms in on the maids watch where the man was looking. When the father and son enter the room, the camera then zooms in on the father and son together, then gets the characters individually with over the shoulder shots, while the father tells the boy something important. The camera is then directed back to the hall, giving a close up of the maid, then gives a close-up of the gun she is holding. There is then an extreme close up on one man that is holding a sniper, in full protective gear, as if to say he was FBI, but later is known as the group called 'Division'. As the camera gets a close-up on the maid and the gun, it then tells the audience that the people that are hunting the father and son down, are extremely prepared and that they seem to have experience, showing us that they have been doing this for quit a while. This logic is then proven when the armed men come in to the scene. The camera also gives the little boys POV when he is watching them from behind the wall in the hall, and also when he's hiding behind the window.
After this beginning, a number of the photographs are being shown. They are either cut, wiped or dissolved, being replaced by the next set of pictures/ videos. Big groups of people are shown, like its an ordinary day. Some pictures are shallow focused, possibly to enhance the graphics of the movie and are shown extremely fast, setting the mood of the audience into fear and curiosity. There is also wide- shots of cities and building being blown up near the end. The narrator could be showing a time line from beginning to end, from the calmness of people at the start, to the crowds of protests at the end. The camera then gets dissolved into the next scene where the movie then begins.
Great job describing the camera shots, movement and focus and you have started to explain how these camera shots have been used to create some meaning. Can you think more deeply about this? How do these camera shots and angles show you something about what is going to happen in the narrative of the film? How do they show you something specifically about the different characters? Or about the larger ideas and themes behind the director's motivations to use these camera shots?
