Music

All though there are both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds, this is mostly non-diegetic sounds. The music starts at a light, slow sound of piano and violins are heard playing, producing a calmness vibe to it. As the film progress' the music starts to creep up in volume, and also increases the speed of the music, but only when something important is about to happen- giving the viewers a hint that somethings about to happen. The music gives the audience a big clue on what the mood is. An example of this is when the 'Big Bad Man' comes in and drums start playing, with the help of the fast beat of the violins, it changes the soft sweet music the previous pianos where giving. It gives it that more dangerous feel and intensifying the mood- showing that this man is dangerous, this is then proven when the father gets killed, although you can't see that the father has died, it is verified when the man says "what a waste, bring the body back to the lab" You know that this man is dangerous because in the film he tries to kill the little boy- who is now a man in his early twenties- trying to put a stop to division. Another example would be when the man is talking to the boy about the future, a moment between father and son, a slow soft piano starts to play- showing that the mood is full of passion and love because the piano has a soft slow beat and the father says "I love you, I always knew you where special, turns out I was right." During the movie it shows that the boy was special because he helps put a stop to 'divison' killing and experimenting on people like him. The instruments played are mainly just violin, drums and piano, no voices are added to the music.

The music in this film shows the different moods and helps direct the audience to what the director wants them to feel. The music helps give it that exciting theme, and also helps intensify the film by building momentum.

  1. Good start: can you describe the music more? What other instruments are there? Are there any words? What is the pace like? Why does the music show danger when the drums start playing? What is going to happen? Why is there passion and love between the father and son? How does this relate to the rest of the film? Can you think of how this music has been used to show any themes or anything else about the characters? Check my blog for more ideas on what to include for explain & analyse (merit & excellence).
